The Chinese mainland on Monday urged Japan to draw lessons from history and act with greater caution in military and security affairs. The appeal comes as 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
Speaking to reporters, Jiang Bin, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense of the Chinese mainland, addressed reports that Japan plans to export six Abukuma-class patrol ships to the Philippines. He stressed that defense and security cooperation should neither target nor undermine the interests of any third party.
Reflecting on Japan’s wartime past—including invasions, colonial rule over neighboring countries and the occupation of islands in the South China Sea—Jiang called for deep reflection and lessons from history. He noted it is essential to exercise prudence in both words and actions in military and security fields to contribute to regional peace and stability.
Jiang also highlighted recent shifts in Japan’s security posture, pointing to breaches of its pacifist constitution and a rise in arms exports. He warned these trends risk forming exclusive blocs and stoking instability in the South China Sea and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
By underscoring historical responsibilities and current regional dynamics, the Chinese mainland’s Ministry of National Defense is advocating restraint and cooperation as the foundation for lasting stability in one of the world’s most strategic areas.
