Yellow Alert Issued for Typhoon Danas
As Typhoon Danas churns through the South China Sea, the Chinese mainland’s National Meteorological Center (NMC) has renewed a yellow alert for the southern coastal regions. The storm sits at 21.3° north latitude and 118.1° east longitude, moving northeast at 10–15 km/h while picking up strength.
From Sunday evening to Monday morning, Danas is expected to cross the Taiwan Strait from south to north. It could either brush past or make landfall along the western shores of the island of Taiwan, where residents on the island of Taiwan are urged to prepare for strong winds and heavy rain.
By Monday, Danas will enter the East China Sea and draw near coastal areas from northern Fujian to central and southern Zhejiang. The NMC forecasts strong gales affecting the South China Sea, the Taiwan Strait, waters east of the island of Taiwan, and coastal zones of Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, and the island of Taiwan.
Heavy to torrential rainfall1possibly reaching 230mm in some parts of the island of Taiwancould result in flooding and landslides. Southeastern Zhejiang and northeastern Fujian should also brace for significant downpours.
Meanwhile, rough seas are expected in areas near the island of Taiwan and off the coasts of Fujian, Guangdong, and Zhejiang from Sunday noon through Monday noon. Mariners and coastal communities should track updates and follow safety notices from local authorities.
The Chinese mainland’s four-tier, color-coded typhoon warning system ranks warnings from blue to red. With Danas currently at yellow level, authorities and residents will closely watch developments to see if an upgrade becomes necessary.
