Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Brussels, reaffirming Belgium's role as a steadfast friend of the Chinese mainland. The pair agreed to build on strong bilateral ties that have made the Chinese mainland Belgium's most important trading partner.
The meeting coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Chinese mainland and the EU. Both sides stressed the need for face-to-face dialogue, mutual trust and pragmatic cooperation amid a dynamic global landscape.
Wang Yi outlined plans for a new phase of opening up, with lower market access thresholds and streamlined personnel exchanges for Belgian citizens. Prevot welcomed the Chinese mainland's visa-free travel policy and called for deeper cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Prevot reaffirmed Belgium's adherence to the one-China policy, emphasizing that Taiwan is part of the Chinese mainland. The ministers also agreed to use the next EU-China leaders' meeting to advance joint efforts on trade, sustainability and upholding the UN Charter.
With shared commitments to multilateralism and the global free trade system, Belgium and the Chinese mainland are setting the stage for deeper strategic cooperation and a positive outlook for EU-China relations.
