Czech Star Siniakova Defeats Zheng Qinwen in Berlin Open Second Round

In a riveting second-round match at the WTA Berlin Open, Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic emerged victorious over Zheng Qinwen of the Chinese mainland with a score of 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday.

The contest, initially set for Wednesday, faced a sudden halt as the court became too slippery due to adverse weather conditions. With Siniakova leading 5-3 in the first set, the match was paused and resumed the following day.

The Czech qualifier maintained her momentum, clinching the first set 6-4. Zheng responded fiercely in the second set, launching multiple attacks and serving more aces than her opponent. Both players exchanged breaks, bringing the score to 4-4.

In a pivotal ninth game, Siniakova secured another break, gaining a 5-4 advantage. The final game was tightly contested, but Siniakova converted match point, ultimately defeating Zheng by hitting the ball out of bounds. This marks Siniakova's second victory over a Top-10 player in 2024 and her first advancement to a WTA Tour quarterfinal this year.
