Jalen Brunson Takes Pay Cut in Knicks’ Strategic Contract Extension

Jalen Brunson, the 2024 All-NBA Second Team and All-Star guard, has officially signed a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension with the New York Knicks, marking a significant moment for the team's future.

According to his agent, Sam Rose of CAA, Brunson agreed to take a substantial pay cut, opting for a deal that is up to $113 million less than he is eligible to sign for a year from now. This strategic decision allows the Knicks to maintain their payroll below the second-apron level of the salary cap, providing them with more flexibility for future transactions and strengthening their competitive edge.

Brunson initially joined the Knicks in June 2022 on a four-year, $104 million deal. With two years remaining on that contract, the new extension showcases his commitment to the team and their shared vision for success.

In addition to Brunson's extension, the Knicks have been active in bolstering their roster. In June, the team traded for Mikal Bridges, sending Bojan Bogdanovic and multiple unprotected first-round NBA Draft picks spanning from 2025 to 2031, as well as a protected 2025 first-rounder via the Milwaukee Bucks and an unprotected 2028 first-round swap to the Brooklyn Nets. The Knicks also retained OG Anunoby on a five-year, $212.5 million deal, further solidifying their lineup for the coming seasons.

Brunson's new contract and the Knicks' strategic moves signal a promising period ahead for the team, as they aim to stay competitive and make a significant impact in the NBA.
