Shi faced a challenging start against Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn, losing the first game 21-14. However, the resilience of the Chinese shuttler shone through as he bounced back to win the second game 21-19. In the deciding third set, the world number one found himself trailing 14-6 but remained composed, gradually narrowing the gap to just two points when Vitidsarn missed a return wide.
