AFCON 2025 opener marred by red cards as Group stage thrills

Yesterday, December 24, marked a thrilling start to the group stage at AFCON 2025, with eight teams battling in Group E and Group F. While big-name players shone, disciplinary issues stole headlines as two red cards changed the course of matches.

In Group E, Equatorial Guinea’s Basilio Ndong was shown a straight red card shortly after halftime for a dangerous tackle against Burkina Faso. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Nzalang Nacional took the lead when Martin Anieboh scored in the 85th minute. However, the Stallions mounted a dramatic comeback, netting twice in stoppage time to seal a 2–1 victory.

Later in Group E, Sudan faced Algeria and saw Salah Adel sent off midway through the first half. The Fennec Foxes took full advantage, with Riyad Mahrez scoring twice and setting up a 3–0 win that places Algeria atop the group on goal difference.

Group F action saw Manchester United’s Amad Diallo become the hero for Cote d’Ivoire, converting the lone goal in a 1–0 win over Mozambique. Meanwhile, Cameroon edged Gabon by the same scoreline, thanks to a late strike that keeps both teams in contention heading into the second round of matches.

As teams regroup for their next fixtures on December 28, fans are buzzing on social media, debates over red-card decisions are heating up, and the race for knockout spots is wide open.
