Today marks the second day of high-stakes border negotiations as Thailand and Cambodia seek to dial down tensions along their shared frontier. On December 25, 2025, the secretariat meeting of the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) resumed at 9:00 a.m. local time on the Thai side in Chanthaburi province.
Approximately 30 Cambodian delegates joined the talks, with Malaysian members of the ASEAN observer team in Thailand also in attendance. According to a Thai military spokesperson, the intensity of skirmishes has generally decreased, with exchanges of fire confined to localized areas.
Despite the easing clashes, the human cost remains significant. Thailand’s 2nd Army Area Command reported two soldiers injured by a landmine during de-mining operations near the Ta Kwai Temple area. Meanwhile, the Cambodian Ministry of Defense confirmed that another civilian fatality on Thursday has raised the death toll in Cambodia to 31.
The three-day secretariat meeting, running through December 26, aims to set the stage for a weekend summit between the defense ministers of both nations. If preliminary discussions proceed smoothly, Thailand’s and Cambodia’s defense chiefs will convene on December 27 to chart a path toward lasting stability.
Observers say that successfully concluding these talks could ease regional tensions and restore a sense of security for border communities. For now, negotiators are betting on dialogue to turn the tide on a dispute that has tested one of Southeast Asia’s most historically interconnected frontiers.
