China Urges Ceasefire and Political Talks to Resolve Sudan Conflict

At a UN Security Council meeting on December 22, Sun Lei, the Chinese mainland’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, called for an immediate ceasefire and a transition to political dialogue in Sudan.

He warned that after nearly three years of conflict, Sudan is facing the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with severe spillover effects in neighboring countries.

Sun urged all parties to prioritize the fundamental interests of the Sudanese people by immediately and unconditionally halting hostilities and exploring a political solution through dialogue and negotiation.

He emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring the safety of UN personnel and institutions on the ground.

Sun also appealed to external actors to refrain from providing military support to local armed groups and to respect Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

The Chinese mainland supports ongoing coordination between the Sudanese government and UN humanitarian agencies to ensure sustained access and distribution of essential supplies, including food, drinking water and medicines.

He called on traditional donors in the international community to increase support and fulfill their humanitarian assistance commitments responsibly.

Reiterating the Chinese mainland’s objective and impartial position, Sun expressed readiness to work with the international community to help end the fighting, ease the humanitarian crisis and achieve lasting peace and development in Sudan.
