This past Sunday (December 21, 2025), the DPRK warned that Japan's move towards nuclear armament must be stopped, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The statement, issued by the director of the Institute for Japan Studies under the DPRK foreign ministry, accused Japan of crossing a red line as a war criminal state by revealing an ambition to seek nuclear weapons. It highlighted recent shifts in Tokyo's security policies: the strengthening of preemptive-attack capabilities, the easing of arms export restrictions, and the reexamination of the Three Non-Nuclear Principles.
"This is not a misstatement, but clearly reflects Japan's long-cherished ambition for nuclear armament," the press release said, adding that these developments challenge Japan's constitution and international laws governing a defeated nation's duties after World War II.
The DPRK also condemned "reckless remarks made by a high-ranking official in charge of recommending security policies," arguing they expose the Japanese political circle's bellicose and aggressive nature and its drive to possess nuclear weapons.
Warning of a potential humanitarian crisis, the statement noted that Japan's history of aggression shows that nuclear armament would bring disaster to Asian countries and humanity, urging peace-loving people everywhere to check Tokyo's military ambitions.
The report was carried by Xinhua News Agency.
