Swiss Interior Minister Weighs Under-16 Social Media Ban

Swiss Interior Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider has signaled that Switzerland may follow Australia and the European Union in studying a potential ban on social media platforms for users under 16. Speaking to SonntagsBlick on December 21, 2025, the center-left minister stressed the need to strengthen protections for young people online.

Joining a global conversation

Earlier this year, Australia became the first country to implement an under-16 social media ban, drawing both praise from parents and concern from major technology companies. The European Union is also debating similar restrictions as part of its Digital Services Act revisions.

Looking at harmful algorithms

Baume-Schneider highlighted the role of recommendation algorithms, which can amplify addictive content and prey on young users' vulnerabilities. "We must not forget social media platforms themselves: they must take responsibility for what children and young people consume," she said.

Advocates widely warn of rising mental health risks, privacy challenges and the spread of harmful content targeting younger audiences.

Next steps in Switzerland

In early 2026, federal authorities will begin in-depth discussions, supported by a government report, on options ranging from usage bans for minors to tighter controls on harmful content. The move follows recent local measures, such as the canton of Fribourg's decision to prohibit students under 15 from using mobile phones in class.

As debates unfold, young global citizens and digital natives will be watching how Switzerland balances child safety, free expression and the responsibilities of tech platforms.
