U.S. Proposes Social Media History Checks for Visa-Free Tourists

In December 2025, the U.S. government proposed a significant update to its Visa Waiver Program, a scheme that allows travelers from dozens of countries to visit the United States without a visa for short stays.

If approved, visitors traveling visa-free would need to submit additional personal details — most notably, years of their social media history — alongside standard passport and background information.

Privacy advocates warn the move could raise data security risks and deter potential tourists. With international travel surging this year, industry groups caution that extra screening hurdles may complicate trip planning for spontaneous getaways and digital nomads alike.

Supporters of the proposal argue that deeper online vetting could help authorities identify security risks earlier, strengthening border safety. However, many questions remain about how the new requirements would be implemented and how social media platforms would cooperate.

The plan entered a public consultation phase in mid-December 2025. Washington will review feedback over the coming months before deciding whether to finalize the rule in 2026. If adopted, it could reshape how millions of young travelers, entrepreneurs and tech-savvy tourists plan their next U.S. adventure.
