Late Sunday evening, a mass shooting at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach left at least 10 people dead, including one of the gunmen, New South Wales police confirmed.
The state’s ambulance service reported that 16 people were taken to hospital and several others were treated at the scene. A second gunman was among those hospitalized, and two police officers sustained injuries during the response.
Nine Network television reported that up to 20 people may have been shot. The attack erupted at approximately 6:40 p.m. local time when at least two armed individuals opened fire on a crowd.
Earlier in the evening, Bondi Beach had hosted a Hanukkah celebration, with many members of the Jewish community gathered for the Festival of Lights. Shortly before 7 p.m., police issued a public warning urging the public to avoid the area and seek shelter.
Video footage and photographs from the scene showed beachgoers fleeing along the shoreline as firearms lay scattered on the sand. Investigators are reviewing the imagery to piece together how the attack unfolded.
