UNEA-7 Concludes with 11 Resolutions for a Resilient Planet

The seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) concluded last Thursday in Nairobi, Kenya, with delegates adopting 11 resolutions to advance environmental action on a global scale.

Under the theme "Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet," the four-day gathering brought together about 6,000 participants from governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector.

The adopted resolutions address the UN's triple planetary crisis—climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Member states committed to coral reef protection, responsible management of minerals and metals, stronger chemicals and waste governance, and the sustainable application of artificial intelligence. The agenda also highlighted international cooperation on wildfire response, glacier protection and tackling harmful algal blooms.

In addition to the resolutions, UNEA-7 approved three decisions and a ministerial declaration emphasizing fairness, inclusiveness and broad participation in environmental decision-making. The assembly endorsed the UN Environment Programme's medium-term strategy through 2029 and set its programme of work and budget for 2026-2027.

During the closing session, Jamaica's minister for water, environment and climate change, Matthew Samuda, was elected president of the eighth session of UNEA, scheduled for December 6-10, 2027. As young global citizens and changemakers look ahead, the focus will be on transforming these commitments into action to safeguard the planet's future.
