Asfura Leads in Honduras’ Close Presidential Vote

In early December, Honduras' conservative National Party candidate Nasry Asfura edged ahead with 40.54% of the vote as officials resumed releasing partial results from the Nov. 30 presidential election.

With 98.71% of ballots tallied, Asfura, a 67-year-old former mayor of Tegucigalpa, leads his closest rival, television host and three-time hopeful Salvador Nasralla, who has 39.15%.

The narrow margin—just over 1.3 percentage points—has kept readers and analysts on edge. Neither candidate has crossed the 50% threshold, setting the stage for a tense weeks-long process as officials verify returns and address legal challenges.

Asfura's campaign, built on pledges to strengthen public security and attract foreign investment, contrasts with Nasralla's focus on fighting corruption and improving social services. Both have tapped into youth-driven movements on social media, turning platforms like TikTok and Twitter into digital battlegrounds.

International observers note that the final outcome could influence migration trends in the region and signal shifts in policy ties with the U.S. and Central American neighbours. Final results are expected by mid-December, but the close vote means Honduras is poised for weeks of uncertainty.
