Trump Confirms Call with Maduro Amid Caribbean Military Buildup

Yesterday, on November 30, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed a phone call with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, surprising observers as tensions between Washington and Caracas hit new highs.

The discussion comes against the backdrop of a Caribbean military buildup launched in September. The U.S. has positioned significant naval and aerial assets to curb drug trafficking—a mission Washington says aims to stem the flow of narcotics into the region, though Caracas accuses it of laying groundwork for regime change.

"I wouldn't say it went well or badly. It was a phone call," Trump said aboard Air Force One, offering little detail about the tone or topics covered.

Maduro and senior Venezuela officials have remained silent. Jorge Rodriguez, head of the National Assembly, focused his recent press conference on investigating alleged U.S. boat strikes in Caribbean waters, sidestepping questions about the presidential conversation.

Recent media reports suggested the two leaders discussed a possible meeting and potential amnesty for Maduro if he steps aside. On CNN's State of the Union this week, Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin said the U.S. offered Maduro safe passage to Russia or other countries.

Washington accuses Maduro of leading the so-called "Cartel of the Suns" and has posted a $50 million reward for information leading to his arrest. While Trump has not threatened direct military action, he warned that anti-drug operations "by land" could begin soon.

According to Reuters, U.S. officials are weighing plans that could include efforts to remove Maduro, with forces ready for a new phase of operations after nearly three months of maritime strikes on suspected drug vessels.

As both sides stand firm, the world watches closely. The unfolding standoff highlights the fine line between counter-narcotics efforts and a broader geopolitical showdown in the Americas.
