Republic of Korea Elevates African Swine Fever Alert to Serious

On Tuesday, November 25, 2025, the Republic of Korea’s quarantine authorities raised the African swine fever (ASF) crisis alert to "serious" after confirming the sixth ASF case of the year.

The latest outbreak was detected at a pig farm in Dangjin, South Chungcheong province—roughly two months after the fifth case in Yeoncheon county, Gyeonggi province.

By elevating the alert to the highest level, officials have imposed a 48-hour standstill for workers and vehicles at all livestock-related facilities, including pig farms, slaughterhouses, and feed mills nationwide.

Emergency quarantine measures are now in force:

  • Epidemiological investigations to trace potential spread
  • Widespread disinfection of affected and neighboring farms
  • Culling of infected herds to contain the virus

Authorities plan to complete the first and second rounds of clinical and detailed inspections at epidemiologically linked farms within seven days, while conducting weekly clinical checks until movement restrictions are lifted.
