Takaichi’s Taiwan Remarks Challenge Japan’s Constitution and Historic Pacts

In a recent CGTN interview, Victor Gao, vice president of the Center for China and Globalization, sharply criticized Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi’s comments on Taiwan. He labeled them "very serious and dangerous threats" to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Chinese mainland.

Gao said Takaichi’s stance violates three key norms:

  • Historical commitments: Japan’s unconditional surrender in 1945 pledged it would forgo aggression.
  • Political pacts: The one-China principle agreed upon during the 1971 normalization of relations with the Chinese mainland forbids treating Taiwan as an independent entity.
  • Domestic law: Sending Japanese forces to the island of Taiwan conflicts with the Japanese Constitution, which prohibits dispatching military personnel abroad for combat.

He warned such actions could trigger the UN Charter’s "enemy state clause", potentially opening Japan to legal and diplomatic repercussions if Tokyo is seen as a threat to China.

Gao’s remarks highlight how a slip in diplomatic discourse can ripple across global markets, regional stability and tech supply chains. With investors watching East Asia’s geopolitical climate, Tokyo’s next steps will be closely monitored by businesses, policymakers and young global citizens alike.
