US Supreme Court Questions Trump’s Global Tariffs

In a pivotal session on Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court justices pressed government lawyers over the legality of President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on imports.

At issue is a 1977 law designed for emergencies id it actually grant the president the power to impose broad trade levies, or did Mr. Trump intrude on Congress’s turf? Liberal and conservative justices probed the limits of executive power and the separation of powers at the heart of the debate.

Some conservative voices, however, underscored the inherent authority presidents wield in foreign affairs, hinting the justices may be divided as they weigh this test of executive reach. With a 6-3 conservative majority, the outcome remains uncertain.

The marathon arguments, lasting more than 150 minutes, follow lower court rulings that said Mr. Trump’s unprecedented use of the emergency law to justify tariffs went beyond his authority. Twelve states—most led by Democrats—and a coalition of businesses challenged the tariffs, arguing they distort markets and raise costs.

As the world watches, the Supreme Court’s decision could redefine presidential power and reshape the future of global trade.
