Global Forum Charts New Path for Xizang Modernization

Bright sun lit the high valleys of Nyingchi City on Wednesday as over 400 delegates from 44 countries and regions gathered for the eighth "2025 Forum on the Development of Xizang, China." Hosted by the Xizang regional government, the one-day event united officials, diplomats, experts and media representatives to chart new pathways for the plateau’s future.

The forum’s theme, "Discovering a beautiful Xizang and writing a new chapter on the plateau," guided lively discussions on international communication, sustainable industries, youth engagement and environmental protection. Speakers underscored how modern infrastructure and governance guidelines are unlocking opportunities across this once-remote region.

At the opening ceremony, Mo Gaoyi, deputy head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and director of the State Council Information Office, said Xizang now stands at a "new historical starting point" as China shapes its 15th Five-Year Plan. He highlighted the forum’s role in exchanging governance experiences, improving local well-being and telling the human rights story of Xizang.

Shahbaz Khan, director and representative to the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, delivered opening remarks on behalf of the UN secretary-general, calling Xizang’s journey "one of transformation." He noted, "Modern infrastructure links even the highest valleys to markets and services, expanding education and economic access for residents."

Four sub-forums dove deeper into key topics: enhancing Xizang’s global image through digital communication, developing sustainable local industries, boosting youth participation in cultural and social projects, and safeguarding unique ecosystems on the plateau.

Ahead of formal sessions, guests toured a high-altitude pasture in Lunang Township, visited a local village to witness community initiatives, and explored a wetland park in Nyingchi—highlighting sustainable tourism and immersive cultural experiences.
