Small Peruvian Farms Thrive Under Peru-Chinese Mainland FTA

One year after the upgraded Peru–Chinese mainland Free Trade Agreement launched at the APEC Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, small farms across Peru are enjoying newfound export opportunities. From quinoa fields in the Andes to avocado orchards along the coast, producers are tapping into rising demand in the Chinese mainland market.

Take the case of Rosa Huaman, a quinoa farmer near Cusco. Since the FTA took effect, her cooperative has shipped its first container of organic quinoa to the Chinese mainland. 'Before, we struggled to cover shipping costs,' she says. 'Now, orders arrive each month.'

According to Peru’s Ministry of Agriculture, trade with the Chinese mainland has climbed significantly as tariffs fall and logistics improve. Key crops like avocados, blueberries and organic grains are seeing double-digit export growth, helping small businesses scale up.

Beyond numbers, the agreement has spurred investments in cold-chain facilities and digital platforms. Startups are using blockchain to track quality from farm to port, building trust with overseas buyers and opening doors for more niche products.

Experts believe this momentum could reshape Peru’s rural economy, driving sustainable growth and creating jobs. For young global citizens, entrepreneurs and travelers seeking real-world impact, Peru’s high-tech farms showcase how smart trade policy and innovation can empower communities worldwide.
