Trump to Impose 10% Tariff Hike on Canadian Goods Over Ontario Ad

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday he will impose an additional 10% tariff on goods imported from Canada in response to a new anti-tariff TV advertisement aired by Ontario province.

The ad, broadcast during Friday’s World Series opener, featured former President Ronald Reagan criticizing U.S. tariffs. Trump branded the spot a “FRAUD” and accused Ontario of “serious misrepresentation of the facts.”

From aboard Air Force One en route to Malaysia, he posted on his Truth Social platform, “Because of their hostile act, I am increasing the tariff on Canada by 10 percent, over and above what they are paying now.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the province will pause the ad by Monday in an effort to defuse tensions.

The decision has drawn swift backlash across Canada’s industrial and labor sectors. Lana Payne, national president of Unifor, condemned the move as an extortion attempt, urging Canada to “use our own considerable leverage” in response.

Analysts note the ad dispute is the latest twist in deeper trade frictions, including Canada’s recent retaliatory measures against U.S. automakers for scaling back production in the country.
