In a move blending naval strength with cultural exchange, the Chinese PLA Navy’s 83rd taskforce sailed into Sattahip naval base on Thursday, kicking off a four-day goodwill mission in Chonburi province.
Leading the fleet are the Qi Jiguang and the Yimengshan, two modern support vessels tasked with building stronger ties between the Chinese PLA Navy and the Royal Thai Navy. It marks the third time Qi Jiguang has visited Thailand and the inaugural voyage for Yimengshan into Thai waters.
Chinese Ambassador to Thailand Zhang Jianwei welcomed the taskforce at Chuk Samet port, setting the tone for a week of joint visits. Crew members will step aboard the HTMS Chakri Naruebet aircraft carrier, tour key military facilities, and engage with cadets at the Royal Thai Naval Academy.
Last October, the Qijiguang arrived at Sihanoukville port in Cambodia, demonstrating its active role in regional maritime diplomacy.
Beyond drills and ship tours, the goodwill visit aims to foster intercultural dialogue by sharing best practices in naval operations and broadening mutual understanding between personnel. Over the next four days, both navies will explore collaborative training opportunities, strengthening bonds across Southeast Asia’s maritime corridors.
As Qi Jiguang and Yimengshan set sails for their next destination, their presence in Thailand underscores the power of naval diplomacy to bridge cultures and build trust in an increasingly connected world.
