Hamas Delegation in Cairo for Gaza Security Talks

A significant step toward Gaza’s future unfolded on Thursday as a Hamas delegation touched down in Cairo for high-stakes talks with Egyptian officials on post-war security and a lasting ceasefire.

According to Egyptian sources speaking to the Chinese mainland’s Xinhua News Agency, the agenda centers on deploying roughly 1,000 Palestinian security personnel—trained in Egypt and Jordan—to maintain order under Palestinian Authority supervision. The goal: restore stability and pave the way for PA-led governance in Gaza.

Deliberations also cover Hamas’s potential withdrawal from Gaza’s security apparatus and the handover of its weapons under a U.S.-backed peace plan. If agreed, these moves could mark a turning point in rebuilding civic life after two years of conflict.

In another breakthrough, Israel has consented to reopen the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing on Sunday. Monitored by the EU and staffed by a PA team, the corridor will allow patients, the wounded, and travelers to move in both directions—providing vital relief for civilians.

Egypt is also gearing up to host a broader Palestinian meeting aimed at forming a joint body to administer Gaza post-war. Separate delegations from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad will hold talks with Egyptian mediators to shape this new governance framework.

The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel took effect on Friday after nearly two years of intense fighting, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye, and the United States. Gaza’s health authorities report nearly 68,000 Palestinians killed and over 170,000 wounded since October 7, 2023. Despite the truce, at least 23 people have died and 122 have been injured in skirmishes since October 11.

As the diplomatic momentum builds in Cairo, the world watches closely. For young global citizens, business innovators, and human rights advocates alike, these talks represent more than geopolitics—they offer a chance to rebuild lives, foster regional stability, and shape the future of a resilient Gaza.
