Hamas Agrees to Peace Deal, but Gaza Sees More Civilian Losses

Hamas has agreed to a peace deal aimed at pausing the conflict in Gaza. Following President Donald Trump’s October 3 demand to halt bombings in exchange for hostage releases, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered Israeli forces to shift from a ground advance into Gaza City to defensive operations.

Despite the agreement, overnight airstrikes struck residential areas in Gaza City and the Khan Younis refugee camps. According to Hamas-run Gaza’s civil defense agency, about 20 buildings were destroyed and at least six Palestinians, including children, were killed.

The Gaza health ministry, controlled by Hamas, reports that the war’s toll has now surpassed 66,000 Palestinian deaths, mostly civilians, with more than 100,000 injured. Gaza also holds the world’s highest rate of child amputations per capita, highlighting the conflict’s devastating human cost.

Galei Tzahal military correspondent Doron Kadosh noted that the Israeli Air Force continued striking Hamas targets shortly after the peace deal announcement, while three Israeli Defense Forces divisions maintain a siege from all sides. The fragile calm underscores the challenges of turning a ceasefire into lasting stability.
