UK on High Alert After Manchester Synagogue Attack

Britain remains on high alert after a car ramming and stabbing outside a Manchester synagogue on Thursday, killing two and wounding three worshippers during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Greater Manchester Police say officers shot the attacker dead at the scene, and are now investigating whether one of the fatalities and a non-fatal victim may have suffered gunshot wounds from police fire. Chief Constable Stephen Watson said an interior ministry pathologist "provisionally determined that one of the deceased victims would appear to have suffered a wound consistent with a gunshot injury."

Of the three people hospitalized, one is in serious but stable condition after what officials described as a "tragic and unforeseen consequence" of ending the assault. Two other victims remain under close medical care.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who visited the site alongside his wife Victoria, vowed to boost security at synagogues nationwide. "We will do everything in our power to protect Britain’s Jewish community," he said in a televised statement.

The attack, declared a terrorist incident, has sparked urgent calls for enhanced safeguards at places of worship and reignited debates around counterterrorism measures and community cohesion across the UK.
