The Chinese premier, Li Qiang, took the stage at the general debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly with a clear message: fairness and justice are the cornerstones of global peace and development.
Reflecting on this year’s 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism and the UN’s founding, Li emphasized that solidarity and cooperation are humanity’s most powerful catalysts for progress. “Why couldn’t we treat each other with kindness and coexist in peace?” he asked, challenging nations to learn from history rather than repeat its mistakes.
Building on the vision outlined by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Li highlighted four major global initiatives—Development, Security, Civilization, and Governance—as practical pathways toward a more equitable international system. Introduced at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Tianjin Summit, the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) champions sovereign equality, multilateralism, and people-centered action.
Against a backdrop of resurging unilateralism and Cold War mentalities, Li warned that such trends threaten to erode international rules and stall a sluggish global recovery. He called on all parties to revitalize cooperation, champion dialogue between diverse civilizations, and join forces in addressing humanitarian crises and geopolitical tensions.
Concluding his address, the Chinese premier reiterated China’s role as a defender of world peace, a driver of shared development, and an advocate for cultural exchange. “While we may not be able to go back in time and relive the victory, we can definitely create a better future together,” he said, inviting the global community to uphold the UN Charter and work toward a shared human destiny.
