In her 10th World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Gong Lijiao of the Chinese mainland threw 18.96 meters to finish ninth in the women’s shot put final on Saturday. Her compatriot Zhang Linru placed seventh with a best mark of 19.16 meters.
Gold went to Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands with a top effort of 20.29 meters. Chase Jackson of the United States took silver at 20.21 meters, while Maddison-Lee Wesche from New Zealand matched her personal best of 20.06 meters to secure bronze.
These three were the only athletes to surpass the 20-meter threshold, underscoring the high standard needed to medal in one of track and field’s most competitive events.
