UN Alarm Over Civilians
The latest Israeli air strikes in northern Gaza have caused widespread suffering, with the UN describing the impact as "appalling" on civilians already facing dire food shortages and displacement.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, condemned the deadly escalation over the weekend in Gaza City, urging all parties to respect international law and protect civilians and aid workers.
Mass Displacement and Desperation
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that thousands fled heavy bombardment along Al Rashid Road, the enclave’s only southern exit. The World Food Program warns that forced displacement is depleting families’ last resources and heightening the risk of hunger, especially among children.
Shelters Under Fire
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said 10 agency buildings were hit in four days—including seven schools and two clinics used as shelters—leaving thousands of displaced residents with no safe refuge.
Rising Hunger Crisis
Gaza health authorities report that 425 people, about a third children, have died from malnutrition and starvation since October 7, 2023. Over the nearly two-year campaign, local officials estimate more than 64,000 fatalities across the territory.
International Calls for Protection
Francesca Albanese, the UN’s expert on Palestinian rights, warned that intensifying strikes threaten to make Gaza City unlivable and endanger Israeli hostages. Israel maintains its goal to defeat Hamas and has directed civilians to move south to humanitarian zones, though conditions there remain dire.
As displacement and hunger worsen, global calls grow for safe corridors and sustained humanitarian access. The scene in Gaza underscores the urgent need for solidarity, data-driven policy, and on-the-ground support.
