FAA pilot program fast-tracks air taxi rollout

In a bold move to accelerate the future of urban transport, the FAA unveiled a new pilot program designed to fast-track air taxi rollout across the U.S. This initiative, directed by President Donald Trump via an executive order in June, aims to clear regulatory hurdles and bring electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft closer to commercial service.

At least five public-private partnerships will kick off under this program, teaming up state and local governments with leading private-sector companies. Among them, Joby Aviation—one of the sector’s front-runners—has already welcomed the announcement, noting that trial operations could begin in select markets ahead of full FAA certification.

eVTOLs promise to revolutionize short-haul flights by whisking passengers on quick city hops or airport transfers, sidestepping road congestion and slashing travel times. Early projects will span a range of services, from short-range air taxis and longer-range fixed-wing flights to cargo logistics, medical transport, emergency management, and offshore energy support.

Globally, competitors are lining up: India, China, and the United Arab Emirates have set their sights on launching air taxi services as soon as next year. Back home, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford says lessons from these pilot projects will inform safe, scalable operations for the entire nation.

Under the program, participants will test piloted, optionally piloted, or unmanned advanced air mobility aircraft weighing over 599 kilograms. With comprehensive training and certification rules finalized last October, the stage is set for a new era in sustainable, on-demand air travel.
