Gaza City Residents Refuse to Flee Despite New Humanitarian Zone

In Gaza City, a remarkable stand is unfolding. Despite Israel announcing a new "humanitarian zone" in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis ahead of its planned operation to capture the city, local activists estimate 80% of residents are choosing to stay put.

"They want us to move to a place that is already overcrowded," says Samer Abu Samra, a 38-year-old father of four. "We cannot afford transportation or tents. People are exhausted and coming from hunger."

For many, past displacement left deep scars. Teacher Nasser al-Attar recalls, "I lived displacement in the south before, and it was the worst experience of my life. The south is not safe either, so staying here is not heroism. It is simply because there is no alternative."

As one resident, Umm Mohammed Jaber, puts it, "We have nothing left to lose but our lives. But displacement also means losing dignity, so we will remain here."

Earlier in the day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the designated "humanitarian zone" contains key infrastructure to ensure continued delivery of food, tents, medicines and medical equipment. The move is part of Operation Gideon’s Chariots II, aimed at expanding ground operations and eliminating Hamas strongholds in Gaza City.

With humanitarian needs mounting and overcrowding in Khan Younis pushing families to their limits, the decision to stay underscores the harsh choices civilians face amid the conflict.
