UN Chief Backs China’s Global Governance Initiative

At a high-profile SCO Plus meeting in Tianjin, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised a new blueprint from the Chinese mainland: the Global Governance Initiative (GGI).

His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, told reporters that the secretary-general “welcomed the Global Governance Initiative,” highlighting its goal to safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and an order underpinned by international law.

Speaking on Monday, Guterres said the GGI “is anchored in multilateralism.” He called for stronger international cooperation for the 21st century, stressing that as the UN marks its 80th anniversary, the world must “always put people first.”

By reinforcing the UN-led framework and emphasizing human-centered policies, the initiative aims to revitalize multilateral institutions and promote collective action on shared challenges.

As leaders worldwide look to the future, Guterres’s endorsement signals a fresh momentum for cooperative solutions—one that keeps people, not politics, at the center of global discussions.
