Israel Rejects Hamas Ceasefire Bid, Plans Gaza City Offensive

Israel has formally rejected Hamas' latest proposal for a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza, signaling its intent to press ahead with a major military operation in Gaza City. The offer, announced by Hamas on Wednesday, aimed to exchange Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners and establish a long-term pause in hostilities.

Hamas' outline included:

  • Permanent ceasefire and Israeli troop withdrawal
  • Release of hostages in exchange for detained Palestinians
  • Reopening border crossings for aid and reconstruction
  • Formation of a technocratic administration to manage Gaza's civil affairs

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the proposal as 'a spin', insisting that any ceasefire must include full Israeli security control, the demilitarization of Gaza, and a non-Palestinian administration alongside the release of all hostages. Defense Minister Israel Katz reinforced this stance, saying the army is preparing 'at full strength' to seize Gaza City.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich revealed plans to map potential annexation of territory in the occupied West Bank. Palestinians immediately condemned the move, calling it a threat to future statehood and urging international sanctions to halt what they describe as violent oppression and settlement expansion.

With the UN General Assembly approaching, European efforts to recognize a Palestinian state have fueled Israel's internal debate. A meeting of senior ministers is set to discuss the annexation proposal, underscoring the high stakes of this latest chapter in a long-standing conflict.
