Iran Eyes Direct Nuclear Talks with US Amid Turbulent Ceasefire

In a surprising turn during an already tense Middle East standoff, Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref told reporters in Tehran that direct nuclear negotiations with the United States could take place under equal, favorable conditions. Speaking on Tuesday, Aref emphasized that Iran remains open to talks that safeguard both sides’ interests.

'If the conditions are suitable, the negotiations can be held even directly,' Aref said, stressing that Tehran will not accept talks designed to impose the US agenda. He underscored Iran’s willingness to build trust, while lamenting that Washington seems 'to be feigning sleep.'

The announcement comes in the wake of a dramatic 12-day conflict that began on June 13, when Israel launched major airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites, killing senior commanders, scientists and civilians. Iran retaliated with multiple waves of missile and drone attacks on Israel, escalating regional tensions.

On June 22, US forces struck Iran’s Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan nuclear facilities, prompting Iran to respond by targeting the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. A ceasefire was brokered on June 24, but Washington’s demand that Iran completely halt uranium enrichment remains firmly rejected by Tehran.

Experts say Aref’s statement could signal a shift toward more direct diplomacy, although significant mistrust lingers. For global citizens and business leaders, the prospect of renewed talks offers hope for de-escalation in a region vital to energy markets and global security. Universities and think tanks are watching closely as any breakthrough could reshape nuclear policy discussions worldwide.

As Iran sets conditions for equal-footed negotiations, the world will be watching: Can diplomacy prevail after months of indirect talks, airstrikes and a fragile ceasefire? For now, Tehran is betting on fairness and reciprocity to steer the conversation forward.
