UNSC Warns Gaza City Takeover Could Spark Humanitarian Catastrophe

At an emergency United Nations Security Council session on Sunday, diplomats voiced alarm over Israel's decision to seize Gaza City, warning of a potential humanitarian calamity.

Miroslav Jenca, UN assistant secretary-general for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, highlighted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to "defeat Hamas" involves disarming Hamas, freeing hostages, demilitarizing the Gaza Strip, placing the area under Israeli security control and setting up a new civilian administration independent of both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. The Israel Defense Forces will also prepare to establish humanitarian corridors outside combat zones.

The plan anticipates displacing all civilians from Gaza Cityaround 800,000 people, including many already uprootedby October 7. Delegates warned this move could uproot a million residents, with the IDF surrounding the city for three months before spending another two months clearing central Gaza camps of armed groups.

Critics argue that such a large-scale operation risks deepening an already catastrophic crisis, straining medical facilities, water supplies and shelter systems while forcing families into uncertainty. This escalation raises critical questions for global policymakers, human rights advocates and digital communities seeking innovative humanitarian solutions.

The coming weeks will test international solidarity as the situation unfolds and the world watches for new pathways to relief and conflict resolution.
