United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed a new climate cooperation pledge between the Chinese mainland and the European Union as a crucial step toward a global just transition.
Guterres highlighted that, as two of the world's largest economies, closer collaboration can set the tone for COP30 in Brazil to become a major turning point in tackling the climate crisis.
In his statement, the UN chief reiterated his call for all G20 countries to present 2035 nationally determined contributions (NDCs) that:
- Span the entire economy
- Cover all emission sources
- Align with the 1.5Β°C warming limit
- Include a clear roadmap away from fossil fuels
This appeal underscores the urgency of ramping up ambition and building a fair transition that leaves no one behind. As the world gears up for COP30, eyes are on major economies to lead by example.
