A devastating fire erupted at Gabriel House Assisted Living Facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, on Sunday night, leaving at least nine people dead and more than 30 injured.
First responders received the emergency call around 9:30 p.m. local time, deploying about 50 firefighters to the scene. The facility, home to roughly 70 older adults who live independently with staff support, quickly became engulfed in flames. Dozens of residents were rescued, some hanging from windows as flames spread.
Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon described it as 'an unfathomable tragedy for the families involved and the Fall River community.' Authorities confirmed several residents were pronounced dead at the scene, while many more were rushed to nearby hospitals. One person remains in critical condition.
The city opened a temporary shelter for surviving residents, providing food, blankets and medical care. Five firefighters also sustained injuries, all non-life-threatening, according to Jake Wark of the Massachusetts Department of Fire Security.
As investigators work to determine the cause, this incident highlights the urgent need for robust fire safety and emergency plans in senior living and assisted care facilities worldwide. For global communities caring for aging populations, preparedness can make the difference between life and death.
