Komarom Emerges as Key Hub for European Electric Bus Production

In the heart of Central Europe, the city of Komarom is racing to the forefront of Europe's green transit revolution. Since opening in 2017, BYD's electric bus plant here has produced over 700 zero-emission buses – and it's just getting started.

Set on the Slovak border, this once-sleepy Hungarian town is now home to a workforce of over 500, with plans to nearly double onboard. The upcoming expansion will not only boost local jobs but also ramp up production of BYD's latest battery-powered buses, each capable of traveling up to 400 kilometers on a single charge.

"Our bus has really good quality, very good energy consumption," says Daochun Zhang, managing director of BYD Europe Commercial Vehicles. From 18-meter articulated models serving cities across the continent to potential chassis production for London's famed double-deckers, Komarom's output is shaping urban mobility from Lisbon to Warsaw.

Hungarian officials highlight the plant as a symbol of strong ties with China. "We believe in working together globally," says Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto. "When East and West join forces, big things happen."

Later this year, BYD will also move its European headquarters to nearby Budapest, strengthening its footprint in the region. For Komarom – home to fewer than 20,000 residents – the expansion promises economic momentum, innovation and a clear path toward national climate targets.

As electric buses roll off the line and hit the streets, Komarom is proving that small cities can drive major change – one sustainable ride at a time.
