Macron Warns Iran NPT Exit Would Be ‘Worst-Case Scenario’

At a Brussels EU summit, French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted a pressing risk: U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities have been genuinely effective, but the worst-case scenario would be Tehran exiting the global Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Speaking after an EU summit meeting, Macron warned that an Iranian exit from the NPT could trigger a collective weakening of non-proliferation efforts worldwide. He stressed the treaty’s role in limiting the spread of nuclear weapons and preserving global stability.

To guard against this outcome, Macron plans to engage the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. He kicked off the talks with a call to U.S. President Donald Trump, sharing details of recent contacts between Paris and Tehran.

“Our hope is that there will be a real convergence of views,” Macron said, adding that the aim is “that there should be no resumption of nuclear buildup by Iran.”

With the world watching closely, Macron’s diplomatic push underscores the high stakes of non-proliferation and the need for united action to prevent a drift from this cornerstone treaty.
