On Saturday in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump marked the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary—which also coincided with his 79th birthday—by rolling out a spectacle of tanks, a precision flyover and rows of marching troops past the White House.
But thousands of miles away, the “No Kings” movement staged rallies across more than 1,500 cities. Demonstrators in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, Houston and Atlanta carried signs rejecting monarchical imagery and calling for change.
In Los Angeles, thousands turned out to protest President Trump’s recent deployment of troops to the city following clashes sparked by immigration raids. Organizers had expected millions of participants nationwide, making it one of the largest coordinated protest efforts in years.
The White House dismissed the rallies. "The so-called No Kings protests have been a complete and utter failure with minuscule attendance," White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said on X.
The parade and counter-demonstrations highlight deep political divides in the United States. While supporters applauded the show of military might and tradition, critics seized the moment to voice frustration over current policies.
