Cambodia, Thailand Wrap Up ‘Open, Positive’ Border Talks in Phnom Penh

In Phnom Penh, Cambodian and Thai officials wrapped up a two-day Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) meeting on Sunday, describing the talks as 'open and positive.' Co-chaired by Cambodia's Lam Chea and Thailand's Prasas Prasasvinitchai, the session marked a fresh push to ease tension along their shared border.

In a joint press release, both sides said they will send a joint survey team to pinpoint and demarcate border markers at agreed locations. The move builds on efforts to reduce clashes and clarify boundaries after a fatal exchange on May 28 that claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier.

Meanwhile, the Thai Foreign Ministry noted the JBC's key role in the peace process. 'This meeting is another important milestone to illustrate progress and reduce border tension,' a ministry statement said. Thailand will host the next special JBC session in September.

However, the commission did not settle four disputed areas, a longstanding flashpoint between the two nations. Cambodia submitted an official letter to the United Nations' International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Sunday, urging Thailand to join the case. Cambodian official Lam Chea warned that Cambodia would proceed unilaterally if Thai authorities decline.

Thailand, which has officially never recognized the ICJ's compulsory jurisdiction, reiterated its preference to resolve disputes via bilateral mechanisms. 'Diplomatic discussion and existing channels have proven most effective,' said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura.

For businesses, travelers and digital nomads, smoother border demarcation could unlock new opportunities in trade, tourism and cross-border cooperation. As both sides prepare for the next round of talks in September, regional observers will be watching to see if this spirit of collaboration can extend to the unresolved hotspots.
