Vietnam Joins BRICS as Tenth Partner Country

Friday saw Brazil, the pro tempore BRICS Chair, formally welcome Vietnam into the BRICS partner fold. The announcement underscores both countries’ shared vision for a more inclusive and representative international order.

"We are delighted to have Vietnam join us," said the Brazilian government in a statement. "With its dynamic economy and commitment to South-South cooperation, Vietnam enriches the BRICS community."

Boasting a population of nearly 100 million, Vietnam has emerged as a key actor in Asia. Its economy, deeply integrated into global value chains, offers fresh opportunities in sectors from tech startups to sustainable energy projects.

Vietnam’s admission brings the total number of BRICS partner countries to ten, alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan. The partner-country category was introduced at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024.

When Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Hanoi on March 28, 2025, both leaders highlighted the importance of diversifying global partnerships and deepening cooperation on sustainable development.

For entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts, Vietnam’s BRICS membership could signal new channels for investment and collaboration. For sustainability advocates and changemakers, it represents a boost to South-South initiatives, amplifying voices from the Global South on the world stage.

As emerging markets continue to reshape economic and political landscapes, Vietnam’s role within BRICS will be one to watch—offering a fresh perspective on cooperation among nations and regions crafting a new era of global governance.
