Elon Musk stirred the pot in Washington on Tuesday, blasting President Trump's massive tax and spending bill as a “disgusting abomination.” On his social media platform X, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO took aim at lawmakers: “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
His fierce critique echoes concerns among fiscally conservative Senate Republicans who worry the bill will balloon the deficit. A recent Congressional Budget Office report estimates it would add $3.8 trillion to the federal government's $36.2 trillion debt.
The House narrowly approved the measure by one vote, and now the Senate—where Republicans hold a tight 53-47 majority— aims to pass the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act by a July 4 deadline. But deep divisions have emerged: deficit hawks urge steeper cuts, while others defend Medicaid funding and green energy incentives.
Members of the Senate Finance Committee plan to meet President Trump at the White House to discuss making business-related tax breaks permanent, a move analysts warn could further swell costs. Senators Mike Lee and Ron Johnson are among at least four hardliners demanding stronger debt and deficit restraints.
At a White House briefing, spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt brushed off Musk’s remarks: “It doesn’t change the president’s opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it.” With divisions on and off Capitol Hill, the fate of U.S. fiscal policy remains uncertain.
