Iran Awaits Clarity on U.S. Sanctions in Nuclear Deal Talks

Tehran is holding its breath as it seeks a clear shift in Washington’s stance on sanctions before moving forward in the nuclear negotiations. Iran’s foreign ministry says it can’t repeat past missteps without concrete assurances.

“I regret to inform you that the American side has not yet been willing to clarify this issue,” spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said at a press conference in Tehran. “It must be clear to us how the oppressive sanctions against the Iranian people will be lifted, to ensure that past experiences are not repeated.”

Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, acting as mediator, presented elements of a U.S. proposal during a short visit to Tehran on Saturday, aiming to bridge the gap between decades of mistrust.

Last month, Iranian and U.S. delegations wrapped up a fifth round of talks in Rome. While there were signs of limited progress, key hurdles—especially the issue of Iran’s uranium enrichment—remain difficult to bridge.

As both sides prepare for the next phase, the outcome will be crucial not only for Tehran and Washington but also for global markets and regional stability. The international community will be watching for any clear signals on sanctions relief to break the current stalemate.
