In a new twist to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Hamas announced on Sunday its readiness to launch indirect ceasefire negotiations with Israel. This statement came as regional mediators Qatar and Egypt renewed their push for peace in one of the world's most protracted flashpoints.
According to Hamas's press release, the group aims to end what it calls the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Key goals include securing the immediate delivery of relief aid and achieving a permanent ceasefire with the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.
On the other side, Israel's military chief, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, has ordered the expansion of the ground operation into both northern and southern Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces said the move is intended to create conditions for freeing hostages and delivering a decisive blow to Hamas.
Egypt and Qatar, both longtime mediators, issued a joint statement on Sunday. They said they are aiming for an initial 60-day ceasefire that could pave the way for a lasting peace and post-conflict reconstruction.
The Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee also weighed in, reaffirming its support for a two-state solution as the only viable path to a just and comprehensive peace. Delegates stressed efforts to boost international recognition of a Palestinian state and halt the current war in Gaza.
The humanitarian toll remains staggering. Gaza's health ministry reported that more than 30 people were killed and nearly 170 injured on Sunday near a U.S.-supported food distribution site in south Gaza. Witnesses told Reuters they came under fire while collecting aid, a claim Israel denied.
In neighboring Rafah, the International Committee of the Red Cross said its field hospital treated 179 casualties mostly with gunshot and shrapnel wounds. This marks the highest number since the facility opened over a year ago.
With indirect talks looming and ground operations intensifying, the region stands at a critical crossroads. Many are watching closely, hoping that diplomatic efforts can finally bring relief to Gaza's civilians and chart a path toward lasting peace.
