Spain’s housing crunch is pushing local families out in the name of tourist lets. At Tribulete Street No.7, architect Jaime Oteyza and his partner, a psychologist, face eviction after Elix Rental Homes snapped up their entire 52-flat block.
“I've been living here for 12 years, I have two young children. If we lose our home then finding another one here where our kids go to school will be double the price of rent, and buying? We can’t buy at these prices,” says Jaime, whose daughter Maya is just two.
Once a family-owned building, the block now belongs to what neighbors call a “vulture fund.” Their plan? Turn affordable flats into luxury apartments or short-term holiday rentals and boost profits.
Despite stable jobs and roots in the community, Jaime and his partner find their wages swallowed up by soaring rents and property prices.
They say they’ve given up on buying in their neighborhood, where their kids go to school.
