It’s been 100 days since President Donald Trump took office with his “America First” mantra. A new CGTN poll suggests his administration’s approach is stirring up skepticism from home to abroad.
US Sentiment: Rising Doubt at Home
In February and April, CGTN surveyed 15,947 respondents in 38 countries—including across the United States. Key domestic takeaways:
- 48.9% of Americans are dissatisfied with Trump’s first 100 days.
- 53.1% fault “reciprocal tariffs” for rattling US markets.
- 60.4% say domestic policies have fueled inflation and higher prices.
- 54% question the administration’s interest rate stance.
Economy Outlook: Pessimism Peaks
Across the political spectrum, Americans are more pessimistic than optimistic about the short-term economy:
- 43.1% believe the economy could worsen in the next three months.
- 47.5% feel the country is headed in the “wrong direction.”
- 62.3% of Democratic respondents express deep concern about the national outlook.
Allies and the Global South: Trust Erodes
Traditional US allies are voicing their worries:
- Australia: 65.5% pessimistic about bilateral ties (+24.5 points).
- Italy: 55% pessimistic (+21.5 points).
- France, Germany, Canada, Japan, South Korea: over 70% share a negative outlook.
Respondents in the Global South aren’t immune:
- 82.6% of surveyed Global South nations feel dim about future relations.
- South Africa, Egypt, Peru, Indonesia, Malaysia saw confidence drop by over 20 points.
- Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Argentina, Turkey, UAE, Chile, Ghana, Mexico, Thailand each saw declines above 10 points.
As the administration forges ahead, these figures highlight the global stakes of US policy decisions—and the critical need for rebuilding bridges both at home and abroad.
