Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump held a rare one-on-one meeting on Saturday in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, aiming to revive faltering efforts to end the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
Their 15-minute session, held on the sidelines of Pope Francis's funeral at the Vatican, was the first private talks since an angry Oval Office encounter in Washington in February.
Zelenskyy said the meeting could prove 'historic' if it delivers the kind of peace he is hoping for. A White House spokesperson called it 'very productive.'
Images released by Kyiv and Washington show the two leaders leaning in close without aides while seated in St. Peter's Basilica.
This Vatican meeting comes at a critical time in negotiations aimed at bringing an end to fighting between Ukraine and Russia.
