Hamas Seeks Permanent Ceasefire Amid Escalating Gaza Strikes

In a significant development aimed at restoring stability in the Gaza Strip, Hamas announced its support for a ceasefire proposal that would require a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces and a permanent end to hostilities. The group emphasized that any agreement must also address the deep hardships faced by Palestinians by including a comprehensive prisoner exchange deal.

A Hamas delegation headed to Cairo on Saturday is engaging with mediators from Qatar and Egypt. Their urgent discussions come as Israeli strikes in Gaza intensify, renewing hopes for a long-term ceasefire even as the initial six-week phase of a previous deal expired on March 1. Negotiations for further phases have so far remained stalled, underlining the challenges ahead.

On the same day, the Al-Qassam Brigades released a video featuring Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander, who has been held in Gaza since October 7, 2023. In the video, Alexander detailed his struggles and voiced concerns over his safety amid ongoing military operations, placing blame on the Israeli government for the delay in securing his release. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed that intensive efforts are underway, following discussions with Alexander's family.

These developments highlight the complexity of seeking a lasting peace in the region. As negotiators meet in Cairo, global observers and advocates for peace are watching closely, hopeful that renewed dialogue might finally pave the way toward a sustainable resolution in Gaza.
