Serbian President Vucic Nominates Endocrinologist Djuro Macut as PM

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has shaken up the political scene by nominating 62-year-old endocrinologist Djuro Macut as the country’s new prime minister candidate. Macut, a respected professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, and deputy director at the University Clinical Center’s Clinic for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, brings a wealth of expertise from the healthcare sector.

The nomination, which awaits parliamentary approval by April 18, comes on the heels of former PM Milos Vucevic’s resignation following a tragic incident at Novi Sad railway station. Vucic praised Macut for his dedication and competence, emphasizing that his appointment represents a commitment to professionalism and integrity during challenging times.

The incoming administration is poised to tackle a broad range of priorities, including boosting living standards and initiating key projects across healthcare, education, science and technology, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, tourism, and environmental protection. Notably, preparations for Expo 2027 in Belgrade are expected to serve as a significant investment platform, signaling the government's intent to spearhead modern reforms.

In his remarks, President Vucic also outlined the delicate balancing act ahead: navigating regional political pressures, managing tariff issues, and revitalizing domestic and foreign direct investments, all while maintaining close ties with traditional Eastern partners alongside Serbia’s European integration goals.

As the country looks toward a new chapter, Djuro Macut’s nomination provides a fresh perspective that blends academic excellence with practical experience—a combination aimed at fostering dynamic, proactive governance for a resilient future.
